If you're looking for a new SF author to pick up, you should do yourself a favor and check out Tobias Buckell. I'm wrapping up his second novel, Ragamuffin right now, and it's a good read. You can even read sample chapters of it and his first one, Crystal Rain at his site. So you don't have to take my word for it. You can head over there and check out his work before buying it.

You had me at "If you're looking..."

I just finished the last (I assume) of Karen Traviss' Wess'har books. Good stuff. I'll never shun or question a TrevorBookRecommendation. (And that sounds like a lot of pressure, but you know what a bookwhore I am.)

(Of course, I have the first of Kage Baker's The Company books that I haven't started yet, and I'm afraid to, because I've noticed there's.. a lot of those. And then I'll be stuck reading them for the foreseeable future until there's no more.)

The Karen Travis stuff was good. Glad you enjoyed it as well.

I really like the Kage Baker books. I've got one in my queue to read right now. Even though there are a lot of them, it wouldn't take much time to get through them. They're pretty quick reads. And the early one stand alone pretty well, so you wouldn't have to read them all at once. The later ones start pulling threads together, but they still stand alone better than a lot of series.
